PALMER -- A 20-year-old man is scheduled for a preliminary hearing today in Palmer District Court on a first-degree assault charge following a Tuesday night shooting in Wasilla.
Gordon K. Carvalho was lodged at Mat-Su Pre-Trial Facility on $50,000 bail after shooting Aaron Reedy, 23, in the shoulder about 7:30 p.m., Wasilla police officer Joel Smith said. Carvalho and Reedy had argued after Carvalho went to a residence at 1860 Knik-Goose Bay Road to get money Reedy owed him, Smith said in charging documents.
Reedy, who formerly attended Palmer High School, was transported by helicopter for treatment at Providence Alaska Medical Center. The bullet shattered his shoulder bone and lodged in his neck, possibly cutting some blood vessels, charging documents said. Reedy's condition was not available because he invoked his right of not releasing information, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Carvalho told police his girlfriend, Jayme Donoho, was sprayed with pepper spray during the argument, according to court documents.
"He said he heard some shooting and both he and Donoho jumped out a back window and ran to the neighbor's house for help," Smith said in charging documents. "He said he did not shoot any gun, but did have one inside the house."
However, another witness to the shooting said she watched as the argument escalated "into both subjects drawing guns," according to court documents. "She said although Reedy had his gun out, he never pointed it at Carvalho. She said Carvalho shot Reedy."
The witness said both men had handguns.
Reedy's girlfriend, Helida Gum, said she accompanied Reedy to get money he was owed, charging documents said. She separated from Reedy and went into a bedroom with the house's renter, documents said.
"She said she started to hear shooting and ran out of the house with the renter and her child," the documents said. "When she was leaving, she saw Carvalho shooting."
Police said there were several shell casings in the house that appeared to have come from a rifle. Several bullet holes were found in the front of the house, police said.
First-degree assault is a class A felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison as well as a fine of up $250,000.
Carvalho's bail terms also require him to be released to a court-approved third-party custodian.
