WASILLA — An Anchorage man is in critical condition after crossing the centerline and colliding head-on with a car Sunday.
Alaska State Troopers say 24-year-old Nicholas Bishop was airlifted to an Anchorage with serious injuries following the crash on the Palmer-Wasilla Highway April 27.
According to a trooper press release, multiple drivers on the Palmer-Wasilla Highway near Trunk Road reported Bishop as a dangerous driver around 10:25 p.m.
“Less than five minutes later, the Alaska State Troopers received a report of head on collision involving the same motorcycle and a Pontiac Grand-Am,” according to the press release.
Witnesses told troopers that, Bishop, “was passing multiple vehicles in a no-passing zone near a corner” when he went into the opposing lane of traffic and hit the Grand-Am near the highway’s intersection with Plymouth Drive.
Behind the wheel of the Pontiac was Alex Phelan, 24, of Wasilla. After hitting Bishop, the Grand-Am collided with a 2009 Chevy truck.
Phelan had a minor laceration but was otherwise uninjured. The pickup’s driver — Darwin Harris, 34, of Palmer — was not hurt.
Bishop, meanwhile, was unconscious and unresponsive when help arrived. Troopers assisted him until medics reached the scene.
“Bishop was then air lifted by Life-Med Helicopter to Providence Hospital to be treated for his injuries,” according to the press release. “His injuries are life-threatening.”
A spokesperson for Providence Alaska Medical Center Monday said Bishop remains in critical condition.
