Man killed after shooting

WASILLA -- A 20-year-old Wasilla man was shot and killed Sunday evening by Alaska State Troopers, after he stood in his doorway and opened fire on law enforcement officers.

The deadly incident occurred after troopers were called to the Lockley Loop apartment of William D. Morrison's 18-year-old girlfriend, after she reported Morrison assaulted and threatened her.

A Fish and Wildlife Protection trooper and an Alaska State Trooper arrived at the apartment building at 8:26 p.m. and found Morrison's girlfriend, her 5-month-old baby, and another 20-year-old woman outside the residence.

The women said Morrison was inside and armed.

Troopers summoned Morrison outside and noticed he was holding an assault rifle, troopers said.

The troopers ordered Morrison to put down the weapon, but he refused and then advanced upon them, troopers said. After they went for cover, Morrison opened fire on them, troopers said.

Troopers returned fire and Morrison ran back inside. After three hours with no contact with Morrison, the troopers entered the apartment and found him dead on the floor.

In accordance with state policy, the names of troopers involved in the use of deadly force will be withheld for 24 hours, trooper spokesman Greg Wilkinson said Monday.

Morrison's body was taken to Anchorage for an autopsy.
