Mannix continues to dominate

HATCHER PASS -- Because of the lack of snow through most of the state this season, Hatcher Pass has been the home to the local prep cross-country ski teams.

Susitna Valley's Tazlina Mannix is not complaining.

The Ram skier won a pair of races over the weekend to run her streak to four wins at Hatcher Pass this season. Mannix won the girls' classical race of the Holmonkol Mat- Su Pursuit on Friday, finishing with a time of 14 minutes, 13 seconds. Mannix's time was over a minute better than second place Rachel Goldstein of Soldotna.

The Susitna Valley junior also finished first on Saturday's freestyle race with a time of 14:05 on the 3.8-mile trail.

Mannix won the two-day total with a combined time of 28:48.

Valdez's Bart Dengel won Friday's classical boys' race with a time of 12:47, while Daniel Harro of Soldotna finished first on Saturday in the freestyle with a time of 13:05.

Tyson Flaharty of West Valley finished first in the combined two-day total with a time of 24:47. Flaharty took second in both the classical and the freestyle.

Ross Wise was the top finisher from the Valley in the boys' class. The Colony skier finished fourth in the two-day total with a combined time of 25:59.

Other high finishers from the Valley included Colony skiers Peter Doner and Kerry Klouder who finished eighth and ninth respectively.

According to Colony head coach Ed Strabel, Hatcher Pass again had ideal conditions for skiing.

"There were excellent conditions today," Strabel said. "It was 10 degrees with a well groomed skate trail and awesome scenery."
