Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Lifelong Alaskan and Palmer resident Marianne Hermon, 73, died at Valley Hospital on Aug. 30, 2005, from a battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 3, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Palmer. Pastor Jonathan Rockey of St. John Lutheran Church will officiate. Honorary pallbearers will be Steven, Cole, Sammy and Garrett Hermon, Keith Boyle and Hugh Wade. Flowers are welcome.
Mrs. Hermon was born Sept. 5, 1931, in Fairbanks. She graduated from Palmer High School and worked for the Palmer School District until her retirement in 1993. She loved quilting, knitting, sewing, gardening, berry picking, fishing and canning. She attended St. John Lutheran Church and was a member of the Pioneers of Alaska and the Valley Quilters Guild.
Her family wrote, "Our mother and grandmother was our pillar of strength and love. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her."
Her husband, James S. Hermon Sr., preceded her in death.
She is survived by her sons, Steve Hermon of Lewis, Colo., Sam Hermon of Sutton and Les Hermon of Reno, Nev.; daughter, Sue Thorne of Wasilla; grandsons, Sam Jr. and Steven Hermon of Palmer, Cole Hermon of Atlanta, Garrett Hermon of Phoenix, Keith Boyle of Wasilla and Hugh Wade of Redmond, Wash.; granddaughters, Leslie Trader of Houston, Texas, Stephanie Hermon of Wasilla, Traci Boyle of Houston, Texas, Kimberly Hermon of Las Cruces, N.M., and Stacey Orquiz of Deming, N.M.; great-grandchildren, Alex and Angelo Orquiz of Deming, N.M., Kyle and Jaden Trader of Houston, Texas, and Emily and Lilly Badger of Wasilla; brother, David Bryant of Wasilla, and two sisters, Jeanne Cavanaugh of Palmer and Judy Harris of California.
The family suggests memorial donations be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements are with Valley Funeral Home & Crematory in Wasilla.
