Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Palmer resident Marvel M. Woods, 99, died Oct. 3, 2002, at the Palmer Pioneers' Home. A memorial service will be at the Palmer Pioneers' Home at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002.
Mrs. Woods was born April 4, 1903, in Todd County, Minn., to Walter W. and Martha May (Jones) Lovelace. After high school she worked and studied piano in Chicago. She married Glen M. Woods in Mishawaka, Ind., on March 9, 1929, then lived for several years in Little Falls, Minn.
She and her family moved to Palmer in April 1945 and settled on the family farm at the four-corners on the Springer Road System. She was an active partner in the farm, producing many homemade loaves of bread, butter, cottage cheese and preserved foods that fueled a growing family.
During her many years in Alaska she was active in the homemakers' club in the Valley. Her entries in the Alaska State Fair won many ribbons for baking, jellies, flowers, flower arrangements, crocheting, knitting and macramŽ. When not busy winning, she was an esteemed judge at the state fair and at the Anchorage Garden Club annual flower show. Her hobbies included gardening, baking, crossword puzzles, games such as pinochle, scrabble and cribbage.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen M. Woods, and son Warren (Buddy) Woods.
She is survived by her sons Noel (Jeanne), of Palmer, Roger (Velma), of Anchorage, Larrie (Jenny) of Soldotna; daughter Nancy (Bruce) Mallory of Hawaii, and daughter-in-law Christine Woods Soulak of Palmer; grandchildren Lynn (Wade Hampton) Miller, Barbara (Craig) Nakajo, Wayne (Mae) Woods, Nathan (Sandra) Woods, Susan Woods, Helen (Greg) Hopkins, David Woods, Catherine Woods, (Hans Roeterink), Brian Woods, Kerry Woods, Warren (Patricia) Woods, Robert Woods, Mary (Peter) Nagel , and Tamara (Jim) Hinkle. She will be missed by 20 great-grandchildren.
Her family described her as a lovely lady, much loved by her family and all who knew her.
