Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Lifelong Alaska resident Mary Ann Mayse, 50, died Feb. 10, 2005, at Valley Hospital in Palmer. A visitation was held Feb. 16, at Kehl's Palmer Mortuary. A service was held Feb. 17, at Anchorage Lutheran Church in Anchorage.
Mrs. Mayse was born April 8, 1954, in Anchorage, where she was a graduate of the 1972 class of Dimond High School. In 1989, she and her family moved to Wasilla.
Mrs. Mayse held the position of claims associate at the Wasilla Wal-Mart and worked there since the store opened in 1994. She was an active member in the community and with Valley Quilters Guild, winning many awards for her quilts. Her other hobbies included painting, reading, arts and crafts projects and gardening.
Mrs. Mayse was an extraordinarily talented seamstress and enjoyed making costumes for her children. She donated her time to make quilts for graduating seniors on the 2003 Wasilla High School girls basketball team.
Her family wrote: "Mary was always willing to give everything she had to give and she did so with an open heart, never expecting anything in return; she very much enjoyed doing things for her friends and family. Mary had a marvelous sense of adventure and enjoyed going hunting and spending time outdoors."
Mrs. Mayse is survived by her husband, Delbert Mayse; sons, David Hannigan, Travis and Rebecca Mayse and Michael Mayse; daughters, Mellissa Mayse and Sara Mayse; brothers and sisters-in-law, Norman and Helen Voorhis of Delta Junction, Earl Voorhis of Fairbanks, Charles Voorhis and Alberta Wilson of Anchorage, Paul and Joan Voorhis of Palmer, Donald Voorhis of Anchorage, Roger and Lora Voorhis of Wasilla, Tony and Judy Voorhis of Anchorage, Jim and Kay Mayse of Ada, Ohio, and Mark and Shellie Wannamaker of Topeka, Kan.; sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Alan Holmes of Mound City, Kan.; sister-in-law, Carole Robinson of Avenal, Calif; nieces and nephews, Amber, Becky, Bill, Chad, Crystal, Daniel, Deanna, Ericka, Gretchen, Jana, John, Leena, Nicholas, Rick, Trista, and Tony and many great nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents John and Leena Faith Voorhis; sister, Caroline, and her mother and father-in law, James and Nellie Mayse.
The family requests that memorial donations be made to Easter Seals, P.O Box 223849, Anchorage, AK 99522. Flowers will also be accepted at Kehl's Palmer Mortuary and the Anchorage Lutheran Church. Her ashes will be entombed at a later date at the Pioneer Cemetery in Palmer.
