Mat-Su 2024 Arctic Winter Games merchandise sales getting 'ramped up' as historic event approaches

PALMER — Those interested in commemorating the historic milestone of the Arctic Winter Games being held in the Mat-Su Valley for the first time can have a variety of merchandise to choose from.

Some examples of official 2024 AWG items include jackets, shirts, hats, gloves, stickers, and scarves. The Black-Capped chickadee was chosen as the mascot for the 2024 games and numerous items featuring the tiny bird are available for purchase, including stuffed animals that chirp.

Cate York, AWG merchandise and retail program manager said they have a, "little something for everybody."

She said they have a unique opportunity to highlight the spirit of the Games while showcasing the spirit of Mat-Su Borough as well.

"Our main focus for merchandise is extending the legacy of the Games in the Mat-Su," York said.

York helps manage the AWG Barn located at 1100 South Colony Way in downtown Palmer to sort and sell official AWG merchandise. It's one of several locations where merchandise can be purchased.

The Mat-Su 2024 Arctic Winter Games take place from March 10 to March 16. Visitors from across the world are making their way to the Mat-Su.

Overall merchandise sales have increased as the 2024 Games draws nearer, according to York.

"They have really ramped up," York said.

This year marks a unique milestone. It is the first time the Arctic Winter Games have been hosted in the Mat-Su. York said that she enjoys helping AWG staff and volunteers work on this massive project and she feels honored to be involved.

"It's really really cool to know that I'm a part of history," York said.

Numerous volunteers from across the Mat-Su and beyond are helping out in various capacities to prepare for this landmark occasion. York said that she's thankful for her various crew members that go above and beyond.

"I would say we have really kick-butt volunteers," York said.

According to York, they are still actively seeking volunteers across numerous categories to help prepare for the games and help out during the various events.

The 2024 AWG merchandise is available for purchase at the AWG Barn leading up to March 10. The AWG Barn hours for March 8 and March 9 are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

During the week of the Games, merchandise will be available for purchase at several locations such as the Raven Hall within the Alaska State Fairgrounds, the Menard Sports Center, Glenn Massay Theater, and the Alaska Airlines Games Headquarters.
