A Mat-Su athlete struck gold during the Special Olympics USA Games in Orlando, Florida last week.
Gretchen Winter earned gold in a pair of track and field events, and silver in another. Winter finished first in the 400 meters, with a time of 1 minute, 9.99 seconds. She was also first in the 800, with a time of 2:40.4. Winter finished second in the 1,600, with a time of 5:54.50.
Winter won two of Team Alaska’s 10 gold medals during the games.
Another Mat-Su athlete, Katie Griffiths placed twice in bocce. Griffiths was fourth in singles and sixth in doubles, alongside unified partner Cindy Dutton.
A total of 42 athletes and unified partners were part of Team Alaska for the 2022 games.
