The Mat-Su 2024 Arctic Winter Games Host Society is hosting members of the AWG International Committee on a site visit January 27-29, including a ceremony to officially sign the contract to host the Games.
The Borough was awarded the Games last year, and the non-profit Host Society was formed. In a ceremony on Friday, Jan. 28 at 9 a.m. at the Mat-Su Borough Building (350 E. Dahlia Street, Palmer), the hosting agreement will be officially signed.
The Arctic Winter Games brings together 2,000 athletes from nine delegations around the circumpolar world, including Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Russia and Scandinavia. The athletes compete in 21 sports including team and individual events, as well as traditional sports such as Dene games. The week-long event is a celebration of Arctic cultures from around the world, with cultural programming held during the Games.
