Over 250 Christmas ornaments from Mat-Su College (MSC) are heading to Washington D.C. to be used to decorate the Capitol Christmas Tree in the West Lawn of the U.S. Capital.
This year, the Capitol Christmas Tree, also known as “The People’s Tree,” was picked from Alaska’s Tongass National Forest.
Students, faculty and staff worked together to create 256 ornaments to celebrate Alaska’s rich heritage and showcase our community’s creativity on a national stage. This project allowed us to share a piece of Alaska’s spirit with the entire country during the holiday season.
Campus Marketing and Communications Coordinator Rachael Maher says, “This project brought the Mat-Su College community together in a creative way. Students, staff, and faculty collaborated to create ornaments that reflect Alaska’s unique beauty, and we’re excited to see them featured in the nation’s capital.”
Some of the made in Mat-Su ornaments may also end up on trees inside the U.S. Capitol Building or other federal buildings in the D.C. area.
Mat-Su College is also excited to be a “Toys for Tots” drop-off location.
