PALMER — Mat-Su College history professor Erik Hirschmann recently published his first novel, "Voyage of the Eclipse"
"Voyage of the Eclipse" is a work of historical fiction that takes place in the early 1800s, an era that Hirschmann described as the "apex of the lucrative Pacific Maritime fur trade."
The story follows Captain Jonathan Fletcher, second mate Joshua Hall and other crew members involved in a voyage across the Alaskan coast in a vessel called the Eclipse.
Hirschmann said the story contains characters and plot points that are based on historical events. He said there's also references to real-world figures from history in certain segments. He said there's numerous action sequences that he grounded with historical accuracy.
"I think it's a pretty fast paced adventure," Hirschmann said.
Hirschmann has taught various types of history classes at the Mat-Su College for two decades.
"It's hard to believe it's been 20 years. It's gone by quick, and here I am," Hirschmann said. "It's been wonderful. I feel very fortunate to live and work here in the Mat-Su Valley."
Hirschmann said that he was inspired to write a book covering Alaskan history thanks to his various research projects and general interest in the various subjects contained in the maritime fur trade time period.
Hirschmann said that he started the journey of publishing his first novel in 2013. He said that he ultimately ended up signing a contract with Epicenter Press out of Seattle, Washington in August of 2021. The book was finally published in March.
"I'm really pleased with it," Hirschmann said. "It's been a long process. It was a lot of work but I enjoyed the work."
Hirschmann said that bookstores such as Barnes and Noble and Fireside Books will carry his books, and there is also a digital version available online.
Hirschmann is already working on the sequel to "Voyage of the Eclipse."
"I've got the story all mapped out," Hirschmann said with a laugh.
Hirschmann said that he plans to hold a presentation at the Mat-Su College cafeteria that covers the history behind his newly published book April 27 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Fireside Books is hosting a book signing event for Hirschmann with a dinner presentation at Turkey Red May 20 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Hirschmann said that he feels honored to have the opportunity to achieve this milestone and he's excited to continue growing as a writer, history professor and overall lover of knowledge.
