As the days tick closer to spring and the sun sets later each day, the Mat-Su Borough Department of Emergency Services is warning residents of possible threats related to the heavy snow that has built up this winter.
As most residents can already attest, this winter has created several significant weather related events across the valley, and there have been some heavy snowfalls in the northern and western portions of the Borough.
Residents should be aware of possible structural collapse from the weight of the snow and the icy layers that have all accumulated this winter, as it may exceed the weight limits of some roof systems or buildings that may not meet current building codes.
“The danger of snow load is very real. The combination of snowfall and the ice, melt, freeze cycles adds a lot of weight to structures. Homes, sheds, and outbuildings all share that risk,” said Houston Fire Chief Christian Hartley.
Taking preventative measures now could help avoid structural damage or collapse. The Borough Emergency Services recommends clearing the heavy snow from rooves, clear away doorways, and remove the softening hard pack in driveways.
“Remember to have your address visible at the end of your driveway. When you call for help, we want to find you as quickly as possible,” Hartley added.
In addition to melting snow loads, residents should prepare now for possible flooding as the snow in the hills increased the normal flooding risk. Additionally, if residents live in a known flood zone, or any area prone to springtime flooding, the Borough advises to take precautions now as conditions can quickly change this time of year.
