It’s that time of year again-time to break out the sweaters, change over the tires, and dust off the snow machines as the skies above fill with grey clouds and the temperatures dip lower. The winter is fast approaching, and for some, it can be difficult to find resources to make sure kids have warm coats.

The Mat-Su Home Builders Association (MSHBA) is proud to announce the third year of its Coats for Kids program, which provides local families with resources to ensure children are warm and prepared for the winter months.

This year, MSHBA has increased its donation to 300 gift cards, thanks to sponsorship support from Vannoy Electric and a generous contribution of 13 additional cards from Value Village of Wasilla. Gift cards can be used at local Value Village, Goodwill, Thrifters Rock and Redemption Thrift stores to purchase winter coats, boots, and other cold-weather gear for children in need.

Gift cards have been distributed to all schools within the Mat-Su Borough School District, where school staff can help connect them directly with families. Families in need may also request support through their child’s school nurse or counselor.

“The Mat-Su is a strong community, and Coats for Kids is one way we can come together to support our students,” said Sarah Lazzarotto, executive director of the Mat-Su Home Builders Association. “We are grateful to our partners and school staff for helping us make sure children stay warm, safe, and ready to enjoy winter.”

The Coats for Kids program reflects MSHBA’s commitment to community service beyond housing. Since 1976, MSHBA’s Charitable Building Committee has provided disaster relief assistance, supported accessibility programs for seniors, and invested in youth training and workforce readiness programs.
