MAT-SU - The Mat-Su Martin Luther King Jr., Foundation held a virtual celebration of MLK Day on Monday with honored guests such as National Black Caucus DNC Chair Virgie Rollins. The event began with land acknowledgement and performances of Alaska State Flag song as well as the National Anthem. Mat-Su MLK Foundation president Aundra Jackson began the event with a discussion about emotional currency.
"If you, America fail to realize that people of color are a part of this country and without the fabric woven in the American flag, this republic doesn’t work," said Jackson.
Jackson then presented Rollins as one of the speakers.
"I am honored today to be a part of this great celebration on Martin Luther King Day. This is exciting to me because Alaska is so far away," said Rollins. "How appropriate that this theme is untied we stand today of all days. This is a real good thing that we need to be thinking about, united we stand. I agree with writer Collin Gaston that together we can achieve greater excess than we can alone. Unity as people living in a society has been an ideal that can be traced back for centuries. The cry untied we stand divided we fall which we use time and time again as far back as 2,600 years. Over 160 years ago President Lincoln famously said that a house divided against itself cannot stand."
