Mat-Su myth-busting

MAT-SU — Alaska is a mystery to many, but seems a good location for busting myths.

The Discovery Channel is in the Mat-Su Valley working on as yet super-secret projects for upcoming specials about Alaska.

Dennis Kwon, a researcher and mechanical engineer for the show “MythBusters” and Beyond Productions, said the Discovery Channel is in the state to work on several Alaska-based television shows.

Although details about all the upcoming shows are not being released, Kwon gave a little sneak peek into some of the work the crew has been doing in the Valley.

“When we started brainstorming we thought about, ‘Hey, what are some common things that happen,’ and one of the ideas was cabin fever,” Kwon said.

The engineer said crew members were at Hatcher Pass last week to put cabin fever to the test for a future “MythBusters” episode. An exact date when the show will be aired is unknown, but programs usually take two to four months before they can be televised, he said.

Kwon said the Discovery Channel will continue to work in locations across the state until filming is complete.

Currently, crews are working on another show in the Mat-Su Valley for “MythBusters,” but details about filming for that program, which is still ongoing, were not released. Although the nature of the experiment is a mystery, the Anchorage Bomb Squad and a dive rescue team are on location.
