WASILLA — Salvation Army volunteers across the state have been ringing their bells in front of Walmart throughout the month, collecting donations for the annual Jingle in July fundraiser.

“We’re proud to work with the Salvation Army once again this year as they raise money for our friends and neighbors in need,” Walmart Market Manager for Alaska Brad Spitz stated in a recent press release. “At Walmart, we know the importance of collaborating with organizations that are making a difference, and our community needs more support than ever. We appreciate the Salvation Army and everything they do for individuals and families in Alaska.”

As the month comes to end, Mat-Su volunteers are gearing up for the last two weekends to collect donations. Major Kevin Bottjen said that local volunteers have been ringing their bells at the Wasilla Walmart Supercenter every Friday. He said their overall donations are coming in fairly well.

“It’s okay. It’s better than I expected considering the COVID situation and the lack of change available,” Bottjen said.

Bottjen marveled at the fact that so many Valley residents donated during these uncertain and financially strained times.

“I’m surprised how well this kettle did during this difficult time for so many families, and yet they still give,” Bottjen said. “It always gets me how giving the people of the Mat-Su valley are. They really care about each other. They give what they can.”

Those interested in making donations to the Jingle in July drive still have time to make a donation during their trip to the Wasilla Walmart. Bell ringers will be July 31.

Those interested in volunteering can call the Mat-Su Salvation Army at 907-745-7079 or send a message on their Facebook page.

“We can use help; and of course, it’s a great way to not go too far out of your way to donate,” Bottjen said. “I’m always amazed how those nickels, dimes, and pennies add up.”

Donations received at the kettles will support Salvation Army’s efforts to provide childcare programs, emotional and spiritual support and services, food support and more in their local communities.

“We are grateful to Walmart for another opportunity to fundraise to continue Doing the Most Good in Alaska,” Salvation Army Alaska Divisional Commander Major John Brackenbury stated in the release.

“Alaska’s annual Jingle in July efforts help our Corps Community Centers continue to provide to families in need whether it is providing meals to the homeless, setting up a kids’ Christmas gift distribution or providing emotional and spiritual support to those in need. Every dollar donated helps The Salvation Army continue providing services to Alaskans in the most need.”

Mat-Su Salvation Army’s next major fundraiser is the annual Stuff the Bus back to school drive on Aug. 8. This fundraiser will also take place in front of their partner Walmart’s various centers, where shoppers have the opportunity to shop for various supplies and donte them on their way out.

“That’s a big one because it will help us provide backpacks and school supplies for kids in the Valley,” Bottjen said.

Bottjen said there’s going to be a bus parked out front and they’re going to try their best to stuff the whole thing.

“It’s a neat way the community can support the local school system and the children, and us,” Bottjen said with a laugh.

Bottjen also mentioned that anyone in the community who needs assistance with utilities, food or other help to call them.

“We’re here to help. There’s no shame in asking for help. That’s what we’re here for,” Bottjen said.

Also in August, the Salvation Army’s thrift store is opening from Tuesday to Saturday with new pricing. Currently, their hours are Wednesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
