Congratulations to Mat-Su Borough School District Science Olympiad teams, this week’s MSBSD Students of the Week. Science Olympiad began as a grassroots assembly of science teachers, and is now one of the premiere science competitions in the nation. Nearly 6,000 teams compete in 49 states.

Teeland Middle School took first place in the B Division, which marks Teeland’s 10th year as state Science Olympiad middle school champions. Since 2003, Teeland students have placed in the top four in the nation in at least one individual event. Two students won gold medals in 2010.

Colony High School took first place in the C Division. Following a second-place finish last year, Colony High School rose to the top as state champion.

Mat-Su Career and Technical High School won the Spirit Award this year and were champions of the high school division last year.

MSCTHS teacher, Tim Lundt is the State Science Olympiad coordinator. He reports that there were 18 middle and 10 high school teams with 190 middle school students and 81 high school students competing March 31 in the Alaska State Science Olympiad on the UAA campus.

Teeland Middle School and Colony High School will represent Alaska at the National Science Olympiad Competition in May on the campus of the University of Central Florida in Orlando. Both schools are raising funds for the trip. To contribute, contact Teeland Middle at 352-7500 and Colony High School at 861-5500.
