Sen. Mike Shower announced his expected resignation, Nov. 3, ending his nearly decade-long tenure in the legislature.

Shower has been serving as a senator in Alaska since 2017, when he began his term in the 30th Legislature representing District O in Wasilla, culminating in his service as the Alaska Senate Minority Leader. His resignation comes amid his bid to serve as Alaska’s next Lieutenant Governor alongside candidate gubernatorial candidate Bernadette Wilson.

In a press release from the Senate Republicans, the Republican Caucus said they had seen great success with Senator Shower at the helm, appreciating his constant commitment to teamwork, leadership, and their shared conservative values.

“As much as it was an honor to serve our nation in uniform for more than two decades, it was an honor to serve the people of District O,” he said.

He continued, “I still feel the pull towards public service. However, it will no longer be with the legislature. Earlier this year, I made the decision to move forward as a candidate for Lieutenant Governor. The experience and skill I bring is better suited to the executive position.”

According to Senator Robb Myers (R – North Pole), “Senator Shower has served as a strong voice for his district and is a valuable member of our team.” The Senate Minority Whip continued, “I wish him well in his future endeavors, both political and personal.”

Republican party officials in District O will now nominate potential replacements for Shower’s seat, which will ultimately be appointed by Governor Mike Dunleavy.

“Moving forward, the Senate Republican Caucus will happily support the Governor and District O constituents to find the best fit for the Senator’s seat.”

In the press release, Shower said:

“Resigning my seat early ensures a quick and smooth transition through the appointment process and allows the Senate Republican Caucus time to build relationships with new members prior to January and the start of the legislative session…I know whoever is appointed to take up the mantle of District O will serve with dignity and integrity.”
