Mat-Su Miners hosting &#8220Valley Idol” search

The Mat-Su Miners baseball organization is hosting its &#8220Valley Idol” search. The winner of the contest, staged at the Great Bear Brewing Company on Wednesday at 7 p.m., will earn the chance to sing the National Anthem on opening day on June 16.

Settler's Bay hosting a charity golf tourney

Mat-Su Home Builders Association and Mat-Su Title Insurance Agency is sponsoring a charity golf tourney to benefit The Children's Place, Wasilla and MSHBA at Settler's Bay Golf Course on Jun 22.

The shotgun start is slated for 9 am. Participants are asked to check in a 8 a.m.

The fee is $125 per player, or $500 per team.

SEA announces cowboy round-up

The Soldotna Equestrian Association has scheduled its first Cowboy Round-Up Family Rodeo Series for May 26-27 at the Soldotna Arena/Rodeo Grounds in Soldotna.

Events in the series include bull riding, barrel racing, calf riding, team penning, roping, calf scramble and double

mugging.

Houston High holding basketball camp

Houston High School is a girls basketball camp June 4-7 from 9 a.m. to noon at HHS.

The camp is aimed for players in grades 3 through 7.

The camp will cover basic fundamentals and training on both offense and defense. There is a fee of $30, and each player recieves a T-shirt and a regulation-sized basketball.

Colony High School

hosting volleyball camp

The Colony High School volleyball program is hosting the Valley Volleyball Camps in May and June.

Torril Jurvis, a former Division I volleyball player at the University of San Diego, will be the head coach for all of the camps.

The middle school camp is slated for May 29-31 The freshman camp, aimed for players entering the ninth grade in the fall, is May 29- June 1.

The high school camp is scheduled for June 4-8, for players entering the 10th, 11th and 12th grades who have high school volleyball experience.

Women's running team

hosting weekly sessions

The Valley Women's Running Team is hosting weekly coached workouts, each Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Palmer High School Track.

The sessions began March 20, and continue through Aug. 14. The squad offers the first two sessions free to non-members. There is a cost of $120 to join for the season. All abilities are welcome, ages 16 through adult.

Players can register

for MYFA football

Players can now register for the MYFA 2007 youth football season.

The registration period ends May 31, with no exceptions.

Those interested can register online, at www.myfa.net, or download a registration form and mail it to the association's Valley office.There is a registration fee of $175.

Practices begin July 30, and players will receive equipment in mid-July.

Special Olympics Mat-Su looking for help

Special Olympics Mat-Su is looking for volunteers to help with its athletic programs.

The organization is currently in search of a comšmunity director. There are about 150 special needs athletes in the Mat-Su delegation participating in winter, summer and fall events. Coaches and buddies are also needed. Buddies are those who compete side-by-side with the special needs athletes. Special Olympics Mat-Su is also looking for people interested in helping out in the areas of communications, budgeting and fund-raising.
