Volleyball club announces tryouts

The Northern Lights Volleyball Club has scheduled tryouts for its U-14 girls’ program, Sept. 11-12 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Palmer Junior Middle School.

The team is intended for girls ages 10 to 14. There is not cost to try out, but each player must attend both sessions. Knee pads, court shoes and a water bottle are required.

The Northern Lights Volleyball Club emphasizes participation and skill building for players interested in learning morea bout the game and developing their skills. Practicies and matches are held twice each week at local schools, and there are some tournaments on Saturdays. The season runs through mid-December.

There is a fee of $300 to participate. Payment plans and discount options are available.

Membership includes a sweatshirt, practice shirt, game shirt, shorts, tournament fees and awards.

Punt, pass and kick competition coming to Valley

An NFL Pepsi Punt, Pass and Kick will be held at Wasilla High School, Sept. 23 from 2-5:30 p.m.

Boys and girls, ages 8-15 can compete. There is no cost to participate, but each athlete must bring a copy of a birth certificate for age verification.

The top three performers in each age bracket earn the chance to move on to compete in the Alaska sectional event, held in Anchorage on Sept. 30.

Players in the sectional can qualify for a spot in the regional competition held in Seattle, Wash., during a Seattle Seahawks game on Dec. 9.

The competition will go on rain or shine, and participants are encouraged, but not required, to wear their favorite NFL jersey. Cleats cannot be worn during the competition.

Wasilla Wild hockey squads to start season

The Wasilla Wild recreational hockey program will begin to fill its Tier III and IV squads on Sept. 12.

Those interested in playing are asked to meet at the following times: bantams, Sept. 12 from 5:15-6:15 p.m. at the Wasilla Multi-Use Sports Complex; pee-wees, Sept. 13 from 7-8 p.m. at the Brett Memorial Ice Arena; squirts, Sept. 20 from 7-8 p.m. at the Brett; mites, Sept. 27 from 7-8 p.m. at the Brett.

The formation of teams will continue through the first week of October. Members of USA hockey can try the Wild association for $10, and beginners to the game are always welome.

There are still opportunities to volunteer or coach.

Miners hosting fourth-annual dinner

The Mat-Su Miners are hosting their fourth-annual dinner and auction Nov. 2 at Evangelo’s Restaurant in Wasilla.

The auction preview will start at 6 p.m., and the dinner will start at 7 p.m.

The buffet dinner includes beef tenderloin, chicken marsala, garlic mashed potatoes, rice, garden and cesar salad, New York style cheesecake and Evangelo’s chocolate mousse.

A cash bar is also available.

The silent and live auction starts at 8 p.m.

Limited tickets are available, and on sale until Oct. 26.

Tickets are $40 per person or $280 for a table of eight.

Colony hosting Little Grapplers Wrestling

The Colony High School wrestling booster club is hosting the Little Grapplers Wrestling camp, Sept. 24-28 at Colony High School.

The camp is intended to be a week-long introduction to wrestling for grade school students, and will be coached and sponsored by the CHS wrestling staff.

Wrestlers meet each night from 6:30-8 p.m., and the camp will conclude with a small informal tournament on Sept. 28.

The cost is $25 for the week, and the fee includes a free T-shirt.

Players can register each evening.

The Palmer Amateur Hockey Association has scheduled its annual evaluations for Sept. 8-9 at the Palmer Ice Arena.

Players in the mite division meet from 11 a.m. to noon each day; the squirts mee from 12:15-1:15 p.m. each day; the pee wees meet from 1:30-2:30 p.m each day; the bantams meet from 2:45-3:45 each day and the midgets meet from 4-5 p.m. each day.

The Matanuska Amateur Hockey Association is hosting its tier III and IV youth hockey evaluations in September.

The midgets meet on Sept. 15 from 6-7:15 p.m. and Sept. 16 from 10-11:30 a.m.

The bantams meet on Sept. 15 from 4:45-5:45 p.m. and Sept. 16 from 8:45-9:45 a.m.

The peewees meet on Sept. 22 from 7:15-8:15 p.m. and on Sept. 23 from 6-7 p.m.

The mites meet on Sept. 22 and Sept. 23 from 4:45-5:45 p.m.

The evaluation fee is $30 for mites, squirts, peewees and bantams.

The cost for midgets is $40.

All evaluations are at the Brett Memorial Ice Arena in Wasilla.

Junior Avalanche

The Junior Avalanche Hockey Association has scheduled evaluations for its house programs.

The mites and squirts will meet on Sept. 8 from 2:15-3:15 p.m. and Sept. 9 from

9:15-10:15 a.m.

The pee-wees and bantams meet on Sept. 8 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. and Sept. 9 from 10:30-11:30 a.m.

The U-16’s meet on Sept. 8 from 4:45-5:45 p.m. and on Sept. 9 from 10:45-11:45 a.m.

Before attending the evaluations, players must register with USA Hockey. To register, go to the organization’s Web site, www.USAhockey.com. Once registered, forward e-mail confirmation to Misty Pfeifer of the Alaska Avalanche, pfiefer_misty@hotmail.com, print the registration packet, fill out the needed information and bring material to the evaluation.

There is a $150 registration fee. The cost includes a jersey, socks and a season pass to Alaska Avalanche home games.

The Junior Avalanche also has an IP program for young skaters. For a flat fee of $100, players will get two hours of ice time instruction each week for 12 weeks. The program is split into a pair of six-week sessions — Oct. 11-Nov. 29 and Jan. 7-Feb. 28.
