Wasilla home of new triathlon

The city of Wasilla will host the Why Not Tri Triathlon June 12 at 10 a.m.

The event includes a 400-meter swim, 8.5-mile bike ride and 5-kilometer run.

AT&T Sports Center features “Fun Days”

The AT&T Sports Center is hosting in-service “Fun Days” on Thursday and Friday.

The Sports Center is welcoming school-aged children to come in and enjoy the courts, and play basketball, dodge ball, volleyball or other court sports.

Coaches may be available to help organize games and activities.

The snack bar will be open for lunch and snacks.

The “Fun Days” are free to ATTSC members and $10 for nonmembers.

AT&T Sports Center hosting basketball tourney

The AT&T Sports Center is hosting its first spring classic adult basketball tournament March 13-14.

The event includes a three-game minimum. A bracketed tournament will follow pool play.

There is a special entry fee of $450 for teams that sign up before Feb. 15. The regular entry fee is $475 for teams that register from Freb. 16-March 1.

There is a cost of $500 for teams that register late, from March 2-March 8.

Teams are responsible for providing their own jerseys with numbrs. Cash prizes will be awarded for the top four teams in the tourney, and the top team will get its entry fee back. There will also be thee-point, free throw and hot shot competitions for prizes, with a $5 entry fee.

MYFA offering early registration

Mat-Su Youth Football Association is offering early registration for the 2010 season now through May 31.

Mat-Su Valley area players who will be in third through eighth grade in the fall can register online at www.myfa.net.

AT&T Sports Center hosting spring break events

The AT&T Sports Center is hosting camp and play events March 8-12.

Each session is $10 for AT&T Sports Center members and $15 for nonmembers. The cost for the entire week is $100 for members and $150 for nonmembers.

Mat-Su Miners Grand Slam Raffle tickets on sale

Ticks for the 28th annual Mat-Su Miners Grand Slam Raffle are now on sale.

The cost is $100 per ticket for the dinner and raffle, slated for April 24 at 7 p.m. at Raven Hall on the Alaska State Fairgrounds.

Only 400 tickets will be sold, and ticket holders are eligible to win cash from a $15,450 prize pool.

Ticket holders also receive free food and beverages, and a season pass that admits two people to all Mat-Su home games during the 2010 season.

Cash prizes are awarded according to the number the ticket is drawn. The first ticket drawn is worth $550, the 175th ticket drawn is worth $500, the 399th ticket drawn is worth $1,000 and the 400th ticket drawn is worth $10,000. In all, 22 cash prizes will be awarded.

Miners hosting annual meeting

The Mat-Su Miners will host their annual meeting March 4 at 7 p.m. in the MTA downstairs conference room.

There is a $25 fee to become a voting memeber.

Palmer wrestling club schedules registration

Athletes can register for the Palmer-based Mat-Su Matmen Wrestling Club Feb. 1 and Feb. 8 from 5-6:30 p.m. in the Palmer Junior Middle School cafeteria. There is a cost of $60 to register.

Boys and girls ages 5 and older can also sign up on the first day of practice, Feb. 22 from 5-6:30 p.m. at PJMS. The club will host practices Monday, Wedensday and Thursday of each week from 6-7:30 p.m. at PJMS.

Colony wrestling hosting camp

The Colony High School wrestling booster club is hosting its Takedown Wrestling Camp.

The week-long camp, slated for Feb. 8-12 from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Colony High School small gym, is for elementary and middle school students.

The clinic is coached and sponsored by the CHS wrestling staff and members of the 17-time state championship team.

The program has won five straight freestyle and Greco Roman championships and the last four Alaska 4A state titles.

Tri-Valley Wrestling Club season set

The Tri-Valley Wrestling Club will start its wrestling season March 2.

Online registration is currently open at www.trivalleywrestling.com.

The club is intended for freestyle and Greco-Roman grapplers, boys and girls, ages 5 and older.

There is a cost of $60 to register. Wrestlers also need their $50 USA Wrestling card.

Mid-Valley in search of wrestlers

Mid-Valley Wrestling Club is inviting boys and girls of any skill level to join the freestyle, folkstyle and Greco-Roman wrestling club.

Pre-kindergarten through adult are welcome to join.

There is a $50 club fee and $40 USA Wrestling card fee. All new members receive a team T-shirt.

AT&T Sports Center hosting volleyball tourney

The AT&T Sports Center is hosting the first Wasilla Winter Fest and Games volleyball tournament March 5-6.

The first 20 teams registered can participate in the two-day tourney. The event is open to high school students and adults. Co-ed teams are not allowed more than two men on the court at a time.

There is a four-match minimum guarantee for the event. Teams will be seeded after pool play.

The entry fee is $175 per team, if paid before Feb. 22. If paid after Feb. 28, there is a $200 charge.

Entry fees are nonrefundable after March 1.

Pro wrestling event slated for February

The Curtis D. Menard Memorial Sports Complex is hosting a professional wrestling event Feb. 13 at 7 p.m.

The National Wrestling Alliance MidSouth and the Alaska Wrestling Alliance will bring wrestlers to the ring.

The main event will feature former TNA and WWE developmental star Derrick King against WWE developmental star “The Human Highlight Reel” Austin Lane.

The Alaska State Heavyweight title will also be on the line, with Michael Maddness taking on Skylar High.

There will also be a special tag-team match.

Reserved seating is available for $12. Floor seats are $10 and bleacher seats at $8.

Mat-Su School District elementary school students and sixth-graders will be admitted free, when attending with an adult with a ticket.

Tickets will go on sale in January.

The event is a fund-raiser for Special Olympics Alaska, according to promoters. Contact Robin Mingo at 715-7284 for more.
