Mat-Su Sports Digest: Wasilla boys split; Palmer boys, Wasilla girls and Alaska Avalanche swept

ANCHORAGE — The Wasilla Warriors split with a pair of nonconfernece opponents from the Cook Inlet Conference over the weekend.

On Friday, the Warriors rolled to a 72-42 win over the Chugiak Mustangs in what Wasilla first-year head coach Ryan Engebretsen called, “a total team effort.”

“It was total team basketball,” Engebretsen said. “A lot of guys were willing to buy into and understand the team game.”

All 12 players in uniform scored for WHS.

On Saturday, the Warriors suffered a 58-51 loss to Service at Service High School.

Bears sweep Moose

KODIAK — David Cratty hit five three-pointers and scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Kodiak Bears to a 45-42 Northern Lights Conference win over the Palmer Moose Friday at Kodiak High School.

Cratty not only led the Bears offensively, but he also helped Kodiak shut down Palmer’s primary threat, guard T.J. Fullmer.

Fullmer was held without a field goal, and just three points on 3-of-4 shooting from the free-throw line.

Senior Justin Draughon and junior Bryce Jacobson each scored a team-high 12 points for the Moose. Senior Jake Parisien added seven.

On Saturday, Jon Bryant hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer to give the Bears a 47-46 win over the Moose.

Bryant led the Bears with a game-high 20 points.

Mustangs top Wasilla

CHUGIAK — With a 38-21 win on Friday, the Chugiak Mustangs defeated the Wasilla Warriors for the second time this season.

Junior Jenna Johnson led the Warriors with nine points, while senior Shelby Fulton added 6.

Liz Meddaugh led the Mustangs with 10, and was the only player in the game to hit double digits in scoring.

Chugiak is now 5-0, and the Warriors are 4-2 overall.

South holds off

Warriors

ANCHORAGE — The South Anchorage Wolverines survived a late Wasilla rally to edge the Warriors 57-50 in nonconference action at South Anchorage High School on Saturday.

Wasilla used a 13-4 run in the second half to help erase a 15-point deficit, but success at the free throw line late in regulation helped the Wolverines grab the victory.

Freshman Celeste Colegrove led the Warriors with a career-high 17 points in the loss.

Senior Shelby Fulton finished 2-for-4 from behind the arc, and added 10 points for WHS.

Junior Jenna Johnson was held to seven points.

Senior Sylvia Bullock, a transfer from Service High School, led South with 18 points.

Avs swept in Texas

WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS — The Wichita Falls Wildcats swept the Alaska Avalanche in a pair of games at the Kay Yaeger Coliseum in Wichita Falls, Texas, over the weekend.

The Wildcats, the top team in the North American Hockey League’s South Division, skated to a 6-3 win over the Avs on Friday and a 7-4 win on Saturday.

Wichita Falls scored four unanswered goals to earn the win in the first game of the series.

Alaska had taken a 3-1 lead with goals by Alex Young, Larry Kincaid and Dustin Skinner.

Young, Jeremiah Dargis, Alex Rasmussen and Kyle Pichler scored on Saturday.

Dog mushing

Dunham first out of Chistochina

Gabrielle Dunham was the first musher out of the Chistochina checkpoint Saturday night in the Copper Basin 300 Sled Dog Race. Dunham, of Valdez, left Chistochina at 6:44 p.m. Saturday, followd by Belgium's Sam Deltour at 7:17 p.m. Yukon musher Ann Ledwidge was fourth out of Chistochina, Zoya DeNure was fifth and Willow's Linwood Fiedler was sixth.

Mushers were tightly bunched Saturday afternoon, with the entire 26-team pack arriving at Chistochina within two hours of each other. The race began at 10 a.m. Saturday in Glennallen.

Moderow leading Cantwell Classic

Anchorage’s Debbie Moderow left the Big Su checkpoint one minute ahead of British Columbia’s Hans Gatt in the 200-mile Cantwell Classic Saturday. Moderow left the final checkpoint bound for Cantwell at 1:14 p.m.

The first musher in the $5,000 race from Cantwell to Maclaren River and back was expected to arrive at the finish line sometime Saturday night.

As of Saturday evening, Moderow was in first, Gatt was second. Michelle Phillips was third and Judy Currier was in fourth.

Big Lake’s Martin Buser left the Big Su checkpoint in ninth place, one minute behind his son, Rohn.
