ANCHORAGE — Mat-Su Borough School District schools again swept the top spots in the 2012 Science Olympiad March 31 in the ConocoPhillips Integrated Science Building at the University of Alaska Anchorage.

For the second consecutive year, Teeland Middle School won the middle school division of Alaska’s Science Olympiad. Colony High School bested Mat-Su Career and Technical High School to take home the top prize this year in the high school division. Last year, Career Tech won the state contest and the right to represent Alaska at the national competition in Wisconsin last summer.

State Science Olympiad director Tim Lundt, who also is a teacher at Career Tech, said 270 students from across the state participated this year.

Lundt said Teeland held on to the top spot again this year, but looks to face tough competition in future years from the likes of Wendler Middle in Anchorage, Hopson Middle in Barrow and Whitestone Middle in Delta Junction.

Of the 19 middle school teams competing, seven were from Mat-Su schools. Teeland’s A Team finished first, Palmer Junior’s B Team was sixth, Teeland’s B Team was seventh, Palmer’s A Team was ninth, Teeland’s D Team was 11th, Teeland’s C Team was 12th and American Charter Academy’s A Team was 18th.

Among the 10 high school teams competing, half were from the Mat-Su. Colony High won first place and Career Tech teams took second, fifth and 10th. American Charter Academy won seventh place.
