Colony senior Shellina Irwin has been named the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman Student–Athlete of the Week.
Irwin opened up the 2011 prep track and field season by winning the shot put event at The Dome on Friday. Irwin, the 2010 4A state champion in the shot, recorded a throw of 37 feet, 8 inches. That mark is nearly two feet farther than a 2010 best that earned her a state championship.
Irwin’s throw was about five feet better than the second-place finish in the event, and her efforts helped Colony placed second in the team standings.
The Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman congratulates Irwin on her success.
