Wasilla woman named Academic All-American
A woman from the Marshalltown Community College basketball team in Marshalltown, Iowa, was named an Academic All-American. When the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) released its list for the 2000-2001 school year it included Wasilla High School graduate Nicky Bean. Bean was named to the elite group, with a 3.62 GPA.
Bean will continue her basketball career as a junior in the 01-02 school year. She signed a national letter of intent to play for Spring Hill College, an NAIA school in Mobile, Ala.
Valley Hospital sponsors 5K walk/run
The Healthy Valley 5K, sponsored by Valley Hospital, will be held Saturday, July 28, at 11 a.m. Registration fees are $15 before race day and $20 the day of the race. Forms are available in the lobbies of Valley Hospital in Palmer and Valley Hospital Medical Center in Wasilla, as well as at most sporting goods stores and health clubs in the Valley. Race-day registration will begin at 9:30 a.m.
The race will have two starting points along the bike path on the Palmer-Wasilla Highway. One race will start at Blaine's Art Supply in Wasilla and the other at Matanuska Fitness Center in Palmer. Both "sides" of the race will finish at Pioneer Peak Elementary School on Truck Road, where a community picnic will be held. Subway donated sandwiches for the event.
Awards will be given in the following classes: 14 and under, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60 and over.
Olympic-sized medals will be given to the first-, second- and third-place finishers for both males and females in all age classes.
The purpose of the run/walk is to unite the communities of Wasilla and Palmer in an activity that promotes health, comradeship and cooperation. The proceeds will benefit Valley Hospital Rehabilitation Services.
Late models do 100
The late models had their first 100-lap feature at North Star Speedway last weekend, with a five-minute red flag at the halfway point. J. P. Hoff beat Kevin Patrick, Corey LaCosta and four other racers to take the checkered flag.

Sprint Tour Series returning to the Valley
The Alaska Sprint Tour series comes back to Capitol Speedway for the 6th annual Morrie Wilkins Memorial Sprint race July 27. Last weekend the tour tore up the track at Twin City Raceway in Kenai. Elton McGahan from Kenai took the main event, beating Robert Hansen of Wasilla for first place.

Ladies day at the drags
The ladies dominated the Junior Dragster class at Alaska Raceway Park last weekend, with Jamie McElroy of Wasilla taking the win in her Pro Flex Jr. Dragster. McElroy dialed in at 9.84 seconds, and broke out with a 9.83 at 69.72 mph. Britni Jackson of Wasilla dialed in at 10.80 and broke out at 10.69 (55.80 mph).

Demolition derby in Willow
Troy Putnam took first place in the demolition derby at Capitol Speedway last weekend, knocking Joey Moen and Jeremy Lopeman out of the competition for the win. Putnam also won the demo's Hot Dog and Australian Pursuit events.

Two tagged halibut were caught last week in Homer. Ronald Campbell from Anchorage caught a $500 tagged fish with Rainbow Trout Tours and Lloyd Gailey from Eagle River caught a $1,000 tagged fish on a privat boat — The Edge.
The derby leader remains Thomas Barkman with a 322.8 pounder he caught on July 1.
