Mat Valley committee recommends against additional hunts

PALMER — The Mat Valley Fish and Game Advisory Committee voted on a slew of proposals Wednesday, including whether to extend the moose hunting season for archers, whether to include crossbow hunters into the archery-only hunt, and whether to set aside a special season for veterans with a Purple Heart who have 100 percent disability.

In discussion committee member Birch Yuknis said existing hunting seasons are “generous” and that he doesn’t see the need for an extra season for archery unless a specific need is identified.

“That’s just your choice of weapon,” Stephen Bartelli agreed. “You don’t get any extra time or extra season.”

Members noted technological advancements that have made archery more precise over longer distances. The proposal to extend the season for archers was unanimously defeated.

Similarly, a proposal to include crossbow in archery-only hunts was turned down unanimously.

“We have to remain consistent,” Bertelli said. “Over the last two years, we’ve voted not to approve crossbow in archery-only hunts.

During discussion on whether to add a Resident Disabled Veteran season, in which a qualified veteran must be 100 percent disabled, have been awarded the Purple Heart, and be receiving compensation from Veterans Affairs, two members identified as disabled veterans and one said he would qualify for the hunt but members agreed an extra hunt wasn’t necessary.

“I have a hard time not voting for it on this day, but I agree with what was said here,” Yuknis said.

Eight voted to oppose the proposal, none voted in favor and three abstained.
