PALMER — Matanuska Brewing Company will add to their businesses operating in downtown Palmer with a new distillery license passed by the Palmer City Council on July 13. Action Memorandum 21-044 passed the council unanimously.

“We’re on the agenda for a distillery license to be added to our facility over at the brewery and we just wanted to let you know we’re excited about that,” said Matanuska Brewing Company Co-Owner Matt Tomter. “We’ve added a winery license so we can do cider and then we’ve just added a beverage dispensary license.”

Matanuska Brewing Company opened in 2017 under the Water Tower as a brewery only, brewing products that are sold around Alaska. Now, Matanuska Brewing Company produces two dozen canned products that are sold at their four brewpubs and at retail locations around the state. In November of last year, Tomter and Matanuska Brewing cut the ribbon on the newest brewpub, opening a location in Palmer. Since the opening of the kitchen and bar in Palmer, Matanuska Brewing added the popular outdoor igloos for patrons and continue to add to the businesses within their Palmer location.

“We really love that we’ve been able to take this old three acre lot with this old building that’s been here since the 30’s and turn it into a brewery and now we’re just going to be able to show it off a little more. We’ll be able to get more people here to see it and enjoy it and make it part of the community,” said Tomter.

Earlier this summer, Matanuska Brewing and Bleeding Heart Brewery opened up a hole in the fence between the two breweries, allowing patrons to walk from one to the other.
