Valley U-11 boys team takes third place
The Mat Valley Blue Lightning boys under-11 soccer team took third-place honors at the second annual Zane Cup tournament, which was held in Anchorage last week.
Age restrictions prevented the U-11 group from taking part in the State Cup Championships, also in Anchorage last weekend. The Zane Cup is a way for athletes 11 and under to compete in a tourney of their own.
To place third, the Blue Lightning took part in a shootout with the Arctic Knights of Fairbanks. At the end of regulation plus two overtimes, the game was tied 3-3. Collin Weaver, Tillerman Croon and Ryan Conroy each made a shootout goal for the Mat Valley team.
The Fairbanks Knights had one shootout goal of its own. The score ended 6-4.
Shaquille Odom made some awesome saves to secure the Lightning win. The Valley team was also presented with the Sportsmanship Award.
The Blue Lightning placed second in regular season play, coming in behind the Kamikaze team of Anchorage. In the Zane tourney, the team came in behind the Kamikazes again, which placed second, and North Pole, which placed first.
