WASILLA — The Meadow Lakes Community Council is holding a meeting at the Meadow Lakes Community Park pavilion for the first time in over two years Wednesday, July 13.

According to Meadow Lake Community Council President Camden Yehle, board members will go over several items such as community improvement priority projects and trail updates during the meeting. There will be hot dogs and other food served throughout the family friendly gathering.

“We’re keeping it light and keeping it fun but making sure we’re keeping tight to our responsibilities,” Yehle said. “We have really, really great people on the board and in our membership. They do a great amount of work.”

This will be the first fully in person meeting the council has held since the start of the pandemic.

“We are seeing a shift,” Yehle said.

Yehle said they’ve consistently held hybrid meetings throughout the pandemic and plan to keep incorporating an online participation element from this point forward. She noted that more people are willing to meet in person now, but they have many elderly council and community members and having remote access helps save travel time and expenses.

“We’ve had really good feedback on our online meetings,” Yehle said. “Online is very convenient for many of us.”

Yehle said the guest presentation at the upcoming meeting will be a unique opportunity. MAT+SAR Search and Rescue is holding a live demonstration at the community park.

“That’s very exciting and that’s something you can’t do online,” Yehle said.

The Meadow Lakes Community Council recently received 40 acres of land from the Mat-Su Borough to add to the community park area.

Council members are currently working on a plan to utilize the newly donated land to expand their existing outdoor recreation area with a trail system adjacent to the park and other assets to improve the overall experience. Yehle said the community park is a public asset they’re looking forward to expanding over time.

“We’re extremely excited about the new 40 acres because that’s a huge deal for us,” Yehle said. “People really seem to enjoy having facilities over there.”

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. and those that plan to attend are advised to dress appropriately for the weather since it’s an outdoor event.
