Every Memorial Day, people pay homage to those who have lost their lives defending America's freedom. This Memorial Day, there are even more people to remember.
At the Veterans' Wall of Honor on May 27, the annual observance will take place. This year, a special tribute will be paid to the police and firemen who sacrificed their lives during the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on New York City.
The program begins at 1 p.m. at the Veterans' Wall of Honor. Leo Kaye, chairman of the Veterans' Wall of Honor will give the opening remarks, followed by the invocation, delivered by Father Stan Allie. After the presentation of the flags, a U.S. Air Force fly-over will take place.
The tribute to fire and police personnel will take place before the national anthem is sung by Adele Morgan. Wreaths will be presented, and then John and Hazel Schwultz will speak about the expansion of the wall. A War Dogs Memorial display will be discussed, and then Lt. Gen. Norton Schwartz, the Alaska Command commander, will deliver the message. The Rev. Mark Conrad will deliver the benediction, followed by a ceremonial firing of rifles and two musical selections, "America Will Always Stand" and "Taps."
Any veteran who has not submitted an application to have their names dedicated on the new section of the Veterans' Wall of Honor are urged to do so as soon as possible. Brad Bradley, the Purple Heart coordinator, will be filing applications of Purple Heart winners, and Jim Grizzel will be submitting names of shipmates who served on the U.S.S. Lexington.
For more information about the program or for an application, interested people may contact Kaye at 376-8810.
