Memorial Day events planned Sunday, Monday

MAT-SU — Memorial Day ceremonies in the Mat-Su Borough are planned both Sunday and Monday.

• The annual ceremony at the Alaska Veterans Memorial near Byers Lake, Mile 147.1, Parks Highway is from 2 to 3 p.m., Sunday.

• The Memorial Day ceremonial walk from the Wasilla Post Office to the Aurora Cemetery on Wasilla Fishhook begins at 10:30 a.m., Monday.

• And Memorial Day ceremonies at the Veterans Wall of Honor, 7777 E. Visitors View Court, begin at 1 p.m., Monday.

Gov. Bill Walker also has ordered all flags be lowered to half-staff from sunrise until noon on Monday in honor of Memorial Day.

At the national level, U.S. President Barack Obama issued the Prayer for Peace, Memorial Day 2015 proclamation, and requested U.S. flags be lowered to half-staff Monday, May 25, until noon.

Congress has also designated 3 p.m., Monday as a time for all Americans to observe a National Moment of Remembrance.

Warm, dry weather also has increased fire danger this spring. The Alaska State Fire Marshal’s Office reminds Alaskans to use common sense and good judgment when starting fires.

Burn permits are required from April 1 to Aug. 31, except for camping or warming fires less than 3-feet in diameter.
