Memorial Day events planned

Valley Life editor

Around the nation, this year's Memorial Day festivities are focusing on World War II veterans, and the Valley is no exception.

In Washington, D.C., the World War II Memorial is being dedicated on Saturday. Locally, Saturday proves to be a day full of remembrance for "The Greatest Generation" as well.

American Legion Post 15 and Post 35 are teaming with the city of Wasilla to celebrate the legacy of World War II veterans on Saturday. The day will start with a prayer breakfast at 7 a.m. at Post 35 (Mile 46 Parks Hwy.) and continue with a 10 a.m. community observance at the Honor Garden, which is located next to the new fire station at the corner of Lucille and Nelson streets. At 5 p.m., American Legion Post 15 (Outer Springer Loop in Palmer) is hosting a dinner for World War II veterans.

The traditional Memorial Day observance will take place on Monday, starting at 1 p.m. at the Veterans Wall of Honor, located at the Mat-Su Visitors Center on the corner of Trunk Road and the Parks Highway. There will be a U.S. Air Force flyover.

Organizers wished to remind people to come early because of parking difficulties.
