A scholarship program has been established in the name of a Colony student who was killed in a car accident in November.
The Sharday Badillo Memorial Scholarship will award four $1,000 scholarships to Colony or Valley Pathways students who plan to study journalism or art.
"Sharday dreamed of going to UAA and studying journalism. I hope this keeps her memory alive and does something positive for other students. She would have wanted this," said Sherry Badillo, Sharday's mother.
The deadline for submitting an application is April 5. Students must have completed one semester at Colony and be enrolled in a second semester, or must have completed two semesters at Valley Pathways, and must be graduating in May. Students must have at least "B" grades, and plan to enter a vocational/technical field relating to journalism or art. Preference will be given to students who have successful work experience, and a student's class attendance record will be strongly considered.
All applications must have a r/sum/, a scholarship folder and a handwritten (in black ink) essay on the applicant's future goals, plans to meet those goals and why they chose the career path. Finalists will be interviewed on April 17, organizers said.
Students can mail applications to Forest Hayden, special chairman, Sharday Badillo Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 110930, Anchorage, AK 99511.
