WASILLA — A memorial service has been set for Saturday for two Wasilla residents who died in the capsizing of a fishing vessel off Kodiak Island last week.
The service for Abby Osborne, 22, and Joshua Osborne, 18, is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Summit Worship Center, located at 125 W. Riley Ave. in Wasilla.
Both were aboard the Miss Destinee fishing vessel in Marmot Bay off Kodiak Island on June 29 when a wave struck the vessel causing it to capsize, according to reports from the Alaska State Troopers and the U.S. Coast Guard.
According to the troopers report, a “rogue” wave hit the Miss Destinee on the port side, causing the vessel to “lay over and eventually roll to the starboard side” as it was traveling through Marmot Bay on its way to the Kodiak Harbor.
Two other crew members – including Kyle Mead, skipper of the Miss Destinee – were located in the wheelhouse at the time of the incident and were able to exit the vessel and cling to the skiff which had floated to the top of the deck of the Miss Destinee.
Crew members from another nearby fishing vessel rescued Mead and the other crewmember. Rescue personnel from the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak later hoisted the two to a helicopter and transported them back to Kodiak.
An aide to Navigation Team Kodiak Boat Crew and two U.S. Coast helicopters – a MH-65 Dolphin and a MH-60 Jayhawk – were deployed to scene located about 23 miles north of Air Station Kodiak.
It was believed that Abby Osborne and Josh Osborne remained onboard the vessel.
Weather conditions at the time of the incident and rescue of the first two crewmembers were reported as having winds of 20-mph with 10-foot seas and rain diminishing visibility to two miles.
The Miss Destinee was towed to the Kodiak harbor after a salvage company was able to right the vessel and begin the dewatering process on scene, according to a report from the state troopers.
The vessel arrived in Kodiak harbor Tuesday at 7:45 a.m. and state troopers along with members of the Kodiak City Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment responded to the vessel and located and recovered the bodies of Abby Osborne and Josh Osborne inside the vessel. Both bodies were transported to the state medical examiner’s officer for autopsy.
Cards for the Osborne family may be sent to the Matanuska Assembly of God church located at 865 W. Auklet Ave., Palmer, AK, 99645.
