Retiring teacher, coach urges Colony grads to ‘find their 68’

Michael John Chmielewski, 91, of Palmer, died peacefully Dec. 6, 2004, at Valley Hospital, with his son and daughter-in-law at his bedside.
A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m., Saturday, , at Kehl's Funeral Home in Palmer. Mr. Chmielewski was cremated and his ashes will be brought to Florida to rest beside his wife, Florence.
Born in Waterbury, Conn., on Dec. 31, 1912, Mr. Chmielewski grew up and worked in Naugatuck, Conn. He was a factory foreman until a heart attack forced his retirement in the 1960s. He and his wife, Florence, moved to Florida in the mid-1970s. They enjoyed traveling in their Airstream for many years until settling down in Panama City Beach, Fla. Mr. Chmielewski moved to Palmer in 1996 to live with his son, Michael R. Chmielewski, after the death of Florence Chmielewski.
His family wrote, "Everyone who met him liked his warm smile and friendly manner. Mike was an easygoing, happy man who enjoyed family, dogs and good food. The delight of Mike's life was to watch his great-grandchildren play."
Mr. Chmielewski is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Michael Robert Chmielewski and Lee Henrikson of Palmer; former daughter-in-law, Penne Chmielewski of Palmer; grandchildren and their partners, Tasha and Jorge Florez of Bainbridge, Wash.,Thaddeus Chmielewski and Janene Schoenborn of Anchorage, Alex Chmielewski and Deb McAlester of Girdwood and Heather and Chuck Lee of Palmer and great-grandchildren, Mateo Florez, Julian Florez, Tiana Lee and Jaxson Lee.
Arrangements were made by Kehl's Funeral Home, Palmer.
