Mickey F. Mathis died March 19, 2005, at Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage.

A service will be held at 7 p.m., Monday, March 28, hosted by Valley Funeral Home, 151 E. Herning Ave., Wasilla, with Pastor Steven Reem presiding. Pictures and stories may be shared by friends and family.

She was born in Azle, Tarrant County, Texas, June 19, 1921 to her mother, Una Lee Dickson (Baker) and father, Willie Jones.

Prior to living in Wasilla, she lived and worked from Nome to Soldotna as a cook and a baker. She also worked in the remote lodge at Lake Clark while they were building the runway.

Her loved ones wrote, "Mickey was an independent woman all her life, with a personality full of flare and a style all her own. She enjoyed movies and had an excellent memory for details, names and faces."

Ms. Mathis is survived by her sister, Mary Lou Cook, and niece, Cheryl Dooley, both of Graham, Texas, a cousin, Irene Gregg of Odessa, Texas and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her dog, Candy, with whom she will now be reunited. Ms. Mathis enjoyed her cockatiels, Sonny Boy and Romeo, nine goldfish and her froggies.

As a long-term Alaskan, Ms. Mathis has a brick at the Alaska Path of Freedom in the city of Wasilla, which can serve as a place to go in remembrance.
