WASILLA — Gov. Sarah Palin will again present Blue Star Banners to Valley families who have members serving in active duty in the military at today’s annual Governor’s Picnic at Iditarod Park.
Families who have not already received a banner are encouraged to sign up at the honor garden during the picnic for the presentation, which will begin at 6 p.m. The picnic runs from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. These names will also be added to the Roll Call of Honor.
The Blue Star Banner program began during World War I and was widespread in World War II. It promotes displaying a small banner in the window of a home of the family left behind.
Palin, Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell and Commissioner of Military and Veterans Affairs Craig Campbell will participate in the event.
