Military service should not be campaign prop

To the editor:

In the mail today I received a campaign advertisement from US Senate candidate Dan Sullivan. It is a glossy spread of him standing in front of a military vehicle, apparently in the Middle East. Mr. Sullivan prominently displays an Alaskan flag so recently unpacked it shows its folds. The ad turns the military recruiting slogan, “Army Strong,” into a Dan Sullivan slogan, “Alaska Strong.”

It has been obvious since he first showed up in Alaska that Mr. Sullivan is an unabashed opportunist, out to make a political career for himself. But, with this advertisement, he shows that his eagerness to use everything to promote himself is limitless and without principle.

There are some things that should be above politics and self-promotion. This attempt to use his military service as a campaign prop not only cheapens his own service, it shows a profound lack of respect toward the institution and the men and women serving in it.

This is not a man worthy to represent Alaska in the United States Senate.
