PALMER — Mat-Su had a rough night hosting the Anchorage Bucs on Monday, but the Miners bounced back Tuesday in a big way. Following an 8-2 loss at Hermon Brothers Field, the Miners blanked the Bucs 3-0 at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage.
Starter Ian Churchill and closer Bryce Tassin combined to toss a three-hit shutout, and helped the Miners improve to a league-best 26-16 mark. The Miners moved back to three games ahead of the second-place Bucs (22-18) in the Alaska Baseball League standings. Churchill fanned 11 over seven innings, while allowing two hits and two walks. Churchill is now 6-0 this summer with a 1.64 earned run average. Tassin earned his league-best 10th save of the summer, working the final two innings. Neither pitcher allowed an extra-base hit in the win.
Caleb Van Blake drove in a pair of runs for the Miners. Danny Wright finished with a single, double and run scored. Drew Swift also had two hits.
The Miners dropped an 8-2 decision to the Anchorage Bucs on Monday in Palmer.
Mat-Su finished with only two hits in the loss, singles by Pinorini and Brooks.
Asa Lacey fanned 13 hitters Sunday afternoon, and the Texas A&M lefty needed only five innings to do it.
Lacey fanned a baker’s dozen over five strong and combined with two relievers for a two-hit shutout during a 7-0 win over the Chugiak Chinooks at Hermon Brothers Field.
The win was part of a doubleheader sweep for the Miners. Mat-Su beat Chugiak 12-5 later in the day.
Malachi Emond and Spencer Henson each pitched an inning of scoreless relief during the first part of the doubleheader.
Austin Pinorini paced the offense, finishing 3 for 3 with four RBI. Nick Brooks added two hits, two RBI and a run. Josh Hatcher led the Miners with two runs, and was one of a half-dozen Miners to cross the plate.
Later in the day, Henson hit his league-best seventh home run in the 12-5 win. Henson also drove in four. Aaron Walters had a triple and two RBI. Connor Denning also finished with two RBI. Hatcher scored a team-high three runs.
Josh Haley fanned five over five and earned the win on the mound.
