Miners drill Oilers

PALMER — Another slugfest, another win for the Mat-Su Miners.

Mat-Su used four extra-base hits and a trio of late runs to score an 11-9 win over the Peninsula Oilers Monday evening at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer.

Jonny Locher blasted his third home run of the summer and scored three times to help Mat-Su improve to 12-8 in Alaska Baseball League play, and cut the Anchorage Glacier Pilots’ National League lead to 1.5 games.

Mat-Su finished with a dozen hits in the game, and each Miner in the lineup had at least one hit. Nick Blaser finished 3 for 4, with a run scored and an RBI. Cameron Frost collected two runs and two RBI.

Seven different Miners drove in at least one run.

Ryan Oglesby pitched 2 1/3 innings, and earned the win in relief. Vince Arobio notched the save.

The Miners jumped to an early lead, with a 3-0 advantage in the second and a 6-1 lead after three innings. Peninsula climbed back into the game with a combined seven runs in the fifth and sixth to tie the contest at 8. The Miners broke the tie with three runs in the eighth.

Frost broke the tie in the eighth inning with a two-run double. Cameron Newell and Locher drew walks and scored on the Frost hit. Frost scored late in the inning on a Terrence Connelly sacrifice to give the Miners their 11th run of the game.
