The Mat-Su Miners scored another big win on the road. The Miners controlled the first month of the Alaska Baseball League season. But the Anchorage Glacier Pilots are keeping it interesting lately.
Wednesday, Mat-Su used a late push to outlast the Pilots 7-5 at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage. The Miners improved to a league-best 19-7 and the Pilots dropped to 11-6.
The Miners, after trailing early, scored a pair of runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Anchorage led 4-1 through five innings, Alex Vergara sparked the Miners with a solo shot to leadoff the sixth. Nick Cirelli also doubled and scored in the inning.
Vergera and Cirelli also came up big in the seventh. Vegera singled to drive in Josh Mendez and later scored on a Cirelli triple.
Mendez finished 2 for 2 in the leadoff spot. Vergera, Cirelli, Steven Lancia and Carter Young also had two hits each.
The Miners return home to face the American Legion All-Stars Friday at 7 p.m. at Hermon Brothers Field. This follows a nine-game road trip that included five games against the Peninsula Oilers in Kenai. Mat-Su grabbed four of the five games in the series, winning those games by a total of five runs.
