PALMER - The Mat-Su Miners were recently recognized as one of the top summer baseball programs in the nation.
The Miners, the top team in the Alaska Baseball League, is currently ranked fifth in the country by Perfect Game, a division of Baseball America.
“To be ranked the fifth-best team out of all the college summer leagues is pretty amazing to me,” Mat-Su general manager Pete Christopher said Thursday. “Baseball America is the premiere baseball magazine for everybody in the business.”
Mat-Su is listed behind top-ranked Yarmouth-Dennis of the Cape Cod League, Fayettville of the Coastal Plains League, Bourne of the Cape Cod League and the Santa Barbara Foresters of the California League.
Santa Barbara is the defending National Baseball Congress World Series champions.
Mat-Su head coach Jeff Pritchard is also excited about the honor, but knows the Miners still have a great deal of work to do as they prepare for the final 18 days of the 2007 season.
Mat-Su is one of two ABL teams on the list. The Anchorage Bucs are ranked 13th.
