Miners edge Bucs during ABL/MLB Showcase

ANCHORAGE — Mat-Su plated a run in the final inning to grab a close win during the second day of the Alaska Baseball League/MLB Scouts Showcase in Anchorage Saturday evening.

Nick Blaser used a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning to drive in Cameron Frost and give the Miners a 2-1 victory over the Anchorage Bucs at Mulcahy Stadium.

Blaser finished without a hit in the victory, but did drive in both Mat-Su runs. Frost also scored on a Blaser ground out in the fifth inning.

Mat-Su used six pitchers in the game, part of an event designed to showcase all of the league’s talent in one venue over a long weekend.

Kyle Serrano got the start and fanned four hitters in two innings of work.

Jonathon Boyer, a Colony High School graduate, also pitched. Boyer pitched the fifth inning, and struck out a batter. Hayden Rodriguez earned the win in relief, after pitching the sixth innings. Isaiah Terrazas posted the save.

Mat-Su finished with five hits in the victory. Frost had two hits and two runs.

The showcase weekend comes to an end Sunday with the annual ABL Home Run Derby and ABL All-Star Game. The derby, which features three Miners (Frost, Cameron Newell and Matt Decker) starts at 1 p.m. The all-star game begins at 4. Eleven Miners were selected to the ABL National Division team.
