ANCHORAGE — It’s either the Anchorage Bucs pitching or playing at Mulcahy Stadium. But for some reason, Pablo Bermudez has become a triple machine.
Bermudez collected a pair of triples for the second time in four games to lead the Mat-Su Miners to a 10-3 win over the Anchorage Bucs at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage on Wednesday.
Bermudez, who also tripled twice during a win over the Bucs last Friday, finished 3-for-5 in the victory and helped the Miners notch their fourth straight win.
The Florida Atlantic sophomore used one of his triples to spark a six-run Mat-Su sixth inning.
After Andy Mee led off the inning with a single and Nick DeBiasse doubled, Bermudez sent a ball deep into the Mulcahy outfield, and the hit scored both runners.
Bermudez quickly scored on a Wes Thigpen single. Matt Wessinger drove in a run on a sacrifice bunt, and Tyler Ruch posted a two-run double late in the inning.
Bermudez also tripled and scored on a David Lyon double in the ninth.
Matt Applegate pitched six strong innings to earn the win for Mat-Su. The Kansas State product allowed six hits and three earned runs. Jason Trivett and James Allen combined for three innings of scoreless relief.
Bermudez, Lyon and Bret Schwartz each had three hits to lead the Mat-Su offense. Schwartz was 3-for-3 with a run scored.
Miners sweep
doubleheader
ANCHORAGE — Mat-Su swept a doubleheader against the Anchorage Glacier Pilots at Mulcahy Stadium on Tuesday.
In the first game, Mat-Su starter Geoffrey Davenport pitched a three-hit shutout in a 6-0 win over the Pilots.
The Arkansas freshman fanned five and didn’t walk a batter during the seven-inning win. After allowing a single in the second, Davenport retired 14 straight hitters.
Andy Mee led the Miners at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Nick DeBiasse was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Mat-Su followed the shutout with a 6-1 win over the Pilots.
Blake Dieterich, who threw nine innings of a 13-inning no-hit win over the Peninsula Oilers last week, earned the win on the mound after allowing three hits and one earned run over 5 1/3 innings.
Gage Smith and Kirk Jewasko combined for two innings of hitless and scoreless work.
DeBiasse led the Miners at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBI.
