PALMER — The Mat-Su Miners are the three-time Alaska Baseball League champions on a mission to become the first club in league history to win four straight titles. After a loss during the first day of the postseason, the Miners will now need back-to-back wins to earn the chance to do it.
The Anchorage Glacier Pilots used a four-run fifth to grab a 5-1 victory over the Miners Thursday night at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer. The Pilots now lead the best-of-3 series 1-0. The teams meet again Friday at 6 p.m. A third game, if necessary, would be Saturday at 6.
Both teams finished in a tie for second in the ABL standings with 26-18 marks during the regular season. Mat-Su won the season series against the Pilots, and earned second place and home field advantage throughout the first round of the playoffs.
Anchorage broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the fifth. The Pilots had 12 hits in the game.
Kody Huff singled and scored in the first inning to give the Miners the 1-0 lead. The Miners had only three hits in the loss. Justin Kirby and Sam Thompson also singled.
