This past weekend, “The Crossroads of the World,” played host to one of the greatest amalgamations of talent outside of the NCAA Tournament. At Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage, the Alaska Baseball League’s best took part in the annual MLB Showcase.

The showcase always delivers highlights and intensity and this year was certainly no exception. For the Mat-Su Miners, it was a reminder of how the roster is chalked full of major league ability.

Although all games in the MLB Showcase are exhibitions, the idea of revenge was still on the minds of the team. The unique thing about the MLB Showcase is that it serves as a guaranteed opportunity for ABL players to get in front of scouts from MLB teams and display their ability.

In addition, the games go seven innings and no further and they end after the bottom of the inning no matter what. Mat-Su started the action with a 4-1 loss to the Anchorage Bucs on Friday. It was a rematch of the lone loss of the season for the Miners in ABL play.

In the opening game, Dom Patrizi was the star offensive player with two singles against the Bucs. Chase Wilcox and Kyle Mccausland also both managed hits in the game as part of the four total that the Miners were able to manage in the game. In terms of pitching, the Miners used five arms in the game, and the biggest success story was the debuting Nolan Murphy.

Murphy made his first appearance of the ABL season and managed two strikeouts in one inning of action.

Chase Wilcox had the lone RBI that brought in Christian Perez and put the Mat-Su Miners on the board to take a 1-0 lead. However, the bottom of the sixth inning turned into one that the Miners would want to forget as they allowed four runs after shutting out the Bucs for the rest of the game.

This would lead to a 4-1 loss to the Bucs to open up showcase play, but it would not become a trend throughout the weekend.

On Saturday, Mat-Su faced the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks for the first and only time this season, and the teams played to a 3-3 tie. The Panners now play as an independent team outside of the ABL, but the Miners know them from battles past inside the league as recently as the mid-2010s.

In the second of the Showcase, the Miners and the Panners engaged in a Saturday slugfest as both teams used great defense to keep the game neck and neck. Jack Hostelter was the standout pitcher for the Miners in this game with two strikeouts in two innings and no runs allowed.

The player who made the difference on offense was Ryan Richard who had a double, run and an RBI single in this game alone. He was joined by Nick Ferri and his RBI double along with Draker Kerr and Kellen Strohmeyer getting singles of their own. The Panners were not going to go away easily though, as their solid pitching and determined offense came up huge late with a three-run top of the sixth inning.

The game remained stalemated from there on its way to a seven-inning tie with a final score of 3-3.

If the Miners were going to win in the Showcase, they had to do it on Sunday.

On a special Sunday evening, the Miners would meet an opponent that they have become very accustomed to in the 2024 ABL season. Mat-Su met the Peninsula Oilers for the third time in a week and would get a chance to beat them once again, but this time at a neutral site.

Early on, the game was very much a slow-burn as both teams took their time to “feel each other out” in the early going. In the third Inning, Mat-Su would strike as Christian Perez would manage a double for the Miners’ first hit and would be followed by Kyle Mccausland who would manage a massive RBI double to get the Miners on the board and give them a 1-0 lead. Dom Patrizi would then join the fun with an RBI on a sacrifice fly to bring the lead to 2-0 in the fourth inning.

In the late stages of the game, the Miners would put the finishing touches on the game led by two outstanding Cornhuskers. Ryan Harrahill and Tucker Timmerman combined for seven strikeouts, four innings, only one hit given up, and only one walk issued.

Their lockdown pitching left the Oilers with nowhere to go and no way to score. Drake Kerr would put the finishing touch on the game with an RBI Single to give Mat-Su a 3-0 lead that they would never relinquish. Nick Bisaccia had the best game from the plate by forcing two walks and managing a single in three at-bats, and in total, Mat-Su would force seven total walks against the Oilers in just these seven innings. It was truly a tour de force in Anchorage.
