PALMER — Mat-Su’s big homestand at the end of the regular season just got bigger.
After watching their second road game get rained out in as many days Wednesday, the Miners now have to brace for a ridiculously busy final stretch. Mat-Su’s game against the Anchorage Glacier Pilots at Mulcahy Stadium on Tuesday was postponed due to weather. A doubleheader, which included a regularly-scheduled contest with the make-up game from Tuesday, was slated for Wednesday at Mulcahy, but about three hours before game time, both games were pushed back.
“There’s standing water in the outfield,” Miners general manager Pete Christopher said Wednesday afternoon of the conditions at Mulcahy.
With less than two weeks left until the start of the Alaska Baseball League postseason, there’s not much room to maneuver on the calendar. That means two more doubleheaders for the Miners.
And two more home games as well.
Anchorage’s next off day is July 28, but Mulcahy is already booked with the Alaska American Legion State Championships. Mat-Su is already set to host the Pilots on July 27 and Aug. 1, the final day of the regular season. Christopher said the best alternative was to schedule doubleheaders on each of those days. The Pilots will be the home team on the scoreboard for the first game, set to start at 3 p.m. The Miners will follow as the home team at 6.
But that also leaves four doubleheaders for the Miners during their regular-season ending homestand. The Miners will play 12 games during the final 11 days of the season. The stretch will also include doubleheaders on back-to-back days against the Bus on July 26 and Pilots on July 27.
Mat-Su, the defending ABL champs, will have a full week off before hitting the field Saturday when the Miners host the Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks at 6 p.m. at Hermon Brothers Field. As of Wednesday night, the Miners (20-12) held a 2 ½ game lead at the top of the ABL standings ahead of the second-place Anchorage Bucs (17-14).
