ANCHORAGE — There won’t be any lack of team representation for the Mat-Su Miners during the Alaska Baseball League’s annual all-star game this afternoon in Anchorage.

More than a dozen Miners have been selected to play in the game, which is slated for today at 4 p.m. at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage. Six pitchers, four infielders, three outfielders and a catcher will represent the Miners on Team North. Team North — which includes players from the Miners, Panners and Chinooks — will also be led by Miners coaches Ben Taylor, Brad Baker and Jon Karcich.

“Eight of our starting nine and half the pitching staff, that’s fantastic,” said Taylor, Mat-Su’s first-year head coach. “We’re really lucky and the kids are really excited to not only play in the ABL All-Star Game, but represent the Miners and the Valley proud.”

Ty Schlottmann, Phillip Orr, Tyler Martin, Drew Smith, Gavin Glanz and Trevor Bettencourt were the Mat-Su pitchers named to the squad.

Schlottman, Bettencourt and Glanz are in a three-way tie for third in the league with three wins. Bettencourt is second in the ABL with 35 strikeouts. Smith is second in the league with five saves.

Glanz and Bettencourt were both named to the team, but will not pitch on Sunday.

Infielders AJ Simcox, Spencer Mahoney, Brenden Farney and Patrick McGrath; outfielders Christin Stewart, John Williams and Gio Brusa; and catcher Michael Thomas will also represent Mat-Su on Team North.

Simcox (.342), Stewart (.339) and Mahoney (.323) are the top 3 hitters in the ABL. Simcox also leads the league with 40 hits and 24 runs scored. Stewart is first in the ABL in doubles (12) and RBI (28).

Stewart, who is also second in the ABL with three home runs, is one of three Miners slated to participate in the ABL Home Run Derby, which is scheduled to start Sunday at 1 p.m. at Mulcahy. Former Mat-Su Miner Adam Martin won the league’s first Home Run Derby in 2011.
