PALMER — At this point in the Alaska Baseball League season, the Mat-Su Miners hitters must be salivating at the thought of facing the Chugiak Chinooks pitching staff.
Saturday, Mat-Su clubbed a dozen hits and scored 14 runs en route to a 14-3 win over the Chinooks at Loretta French Field in Chugiak.
The Miners, now averaging 12 hits and 11 runs per game against Chugiak, improved to 5-0 against the Chinooks. The Miners are also 8-3 in ABL play, first in the National League.
Cameron Newell blasted a grand slam, and knocked in six runs for the Miners. Newell was 3 for 6 in the game, and raised his average to .444. Cameron Frost added a 3 for 5 effort, with three runs and two RBI. Frost hit a home run, and Nick Senzel also went deep for the second straight day.
Paul Panaccione and Terrence Connelly added two hits each. Frost and Panaccione scored three runs each. Senzel and Dayne Wunderlich added two runs each.
Starter Jon Ferrendelli earned the win, improving to 3-1 on the mound. Ferrendelli scattered six hits and one earned run over 6 2/3 innings.
